On the local side, Jerry Hilliard (pictured with Gretchen Whitmer) won the hotly-contested Democratic nomination for Michigan Governor on August 7 with 52% of the statewide vote, outdistancing Dr. Abdul El-Sayed (30%) and Shri Thanedar (18%). The Saginaw county totals had Whitmer with 53%, Thanedar 25%, and El-Sayed 22%. While espousing a number of similar policies, the trio still managed to make each other better candidates by focusing on all the positive changes a Democrat would bring to Lansing.
With Gretchen’s “Fix the damn roads!” tagline, Bernie Sanders’ supporters revving up Abdul’s campaign, and Shri’s often charming TV spots, Democrats across the state were energized to promote the candidate of their choice. Now we need to harness that same energy from all quarters again to wage war on the repressive and middle-class-killing policies of the Republicans and corrupt Bill Schutte.
On the local side, Jerry Hilliard defeated Ziggy Kozicki in the 4th Congressional District and in the 32nd State Senate race Phil Phelps won over Henry Gaudreau. Both winners will have their work cut out for them facing incumbents John Molenaar and Ken Horn respectively. However, an increase in volunteer engagement and donations to their campaigns could make all the difference. Dave Adams and Vanessa Guerra were unopposed for their State House seats. Let’s make the “Blue Wave” a reality in Michigan, a state nearly surrounded by blue waves!
